Choosing a POS System for a Chicago Restaurant or Bar

A POS decision in Chicago is not just a software decision — it locks in your processing rate, your tip handling, your delivery integrations, and often a multi-year hardware lease. Here is the evaluation framework we use with restaurant clients across the city.

Start with the processing contract, not the software demo

Many POS vendors subsidize slick software with above-market processing. Ask for the interchange-plus markup in writing before you evaluate features. If the vendor refuses to unbundle, assume the markup is the product.

Chicago-specific requirements to test

These come up in nearly every Chicago restaurant build we assist with.

  • Tip pooling and reporting that survives an Illinois Department of Labor review.
  • Patio and seasonal staffing modes — Chicago volume can double May through September.
  • Third-party delivery injection so orders land in the kitchen without a second tablet.
  • Offline mode: older buildings in Wicker Park and Pilsen still lose connectivity.
  • Chicago restaurant tax and Cook County sales tax configured correctly at setup.

Total cost over 36 months

Compare vendors on the full three-year cost: hardware, software per terminal, payment markup on projected volume, and early-termination exposure. A system that costs $40 more per month but saves 0.30% on $150,000 monthly volume nets you roughly $4,900 a year.

We test the systems so you do not have to

As an independent broker, we are not tied to one POS vendor. We shortlist two or three systems that fit your service model, negotiate the processing side, and stay on for onboarding and staff training in your Chicago location.

Serving merchants in River North, Logan Square, Fulton Market, Hyde Park and throughout the Chicago area.
