Credit Card Processing Fees in Chicago: What Local Businesses Actually Pay

Most Chicago merchants we review are paying between 0.4% and 1.1% more than they need to. Not because their processor is hiding anything illegal, but because effective rate, interchange, and markup all get bundled into one line on the statement. Here is how to read the bill your business gets every month.

The three layers of every swipe

Every card transaction in Illinois — whether it happens at a River North restaurant or an online storefront shipping from Pilsen — is priced in three layers.

  • Interchange: paid to the card-issuing bank. Non-negotiable, but the category your transaction lands in is influenceable.
  • Assessments: paid to Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or Amex. Fixed for everyone.
  • Processor markup: the only truly negotiable layer. This is where overpayment lives.

What Chicago merchants typically overpay for

Across statement reviews for businesses in the Loop, West Loop, and along Milwaukee Avenue, the same padded line items keep appearing: monthly PCI 'non-compliance' fees that were never resolved, batch fees charged per terminal instead of per day, and tiered pricing that quietly reclassifies rewards cards as 'non-qualified.'

A Chicago restaurant doing $180,000 a month in card volume with a 0.55% excess markup is handing over roughly $11,880 a year that should stay in the business.

How to audit your own statement in 15 minutes

Pull the last full month. Divide total fees by total card volume — that is your effective rate. For a card-present Chicago retailer, anything above 2.6% deserves a second look; for card-not-present, above 3.1%.

Then hunt for anything charged monthly that is not interchange: PCI fees, gateway fees, statement fees, terminal rental on hardware you already own.
